From Feral to Family - One Cat's Journey

Some sessions tug a little at your heartstrings - this was one of them.

Recently, I had the honor of photographing a very special cat affectionally known as Kitty Boy. This wasn’t just any session, it was a surprise birthday gift from a thoughtful husband to his newlywed wife, celebrating the bond she shares with the cat she rescued.

Kitty Boy was once a stray, suffering from mange, unkempt fur and a general wariness of the world. Over time, his new friend earned his trust and eventually brought him indoors, where he could live safely and comfortably. When she moved to another state, Kitty Boy came too.

Though not much of a cuddler, Kitty Boy follows her around the house, lets her pet him and curls up next to her on the couch after long days at work. That’s their special time together.

When she met her now husband, Kitty Boy had to trust someone new. Slowly, but surely, he did. And now the three of them happily share a home together in the sunshine state.

Knowing this session would be different, both I and Kitty Boy’s parents entered it with low expectations. After all, cats will be cats, but a former feral cat? That’s a whole other level of unpredictable.

But, Kitty Boy absolutely stepped up to the plate! At times, he looked directly into the camera, as if I had asked him to pose. When he needed a little reassurance, one of his parents would gently rub his head, and he’d settle again.

We took our time during the session, building in breaks and outfit changes. This helped everyone reset between photos. The result? A calm, connected experience that captured their bond in a way I hadn’t dared to expect.

I’ll admit, in the days leading up to the shoot, I was nervous- worried I might not get a single decent shot. But it went better than I ever imagined.

Pets come in all shapes and sizes and personalities. Some are cuddly, some are aloof, and some quietly follow us around like our shadow. Every one of them shares a unique bond with us, and that deserves to be celebrated.
