What size wall art?

When it comes to wall art, most people I work with are afraid to go big. So to be safe, they opt to choose a smaller size art piece to hang on their wall. In their mind, 20x16” sounds large. But in reality, it’s really quite small. So how do you know what size wall art you should get for your space?

If you think you know the answer, I challenge you to think even larger. Then go larger again. Now, you’re probably closer to where you should be. Since many people have a hard time visualizing what an 8x10 looks like on their wall, I suggest taking a sheet of regular paper (8 ½ x11”) and taping it on the wall where you want to hang your artwork from your session. Now, stand back and look at it. How does it work for you? It’s probably too small and gets lost among everything else in the room.

If you think a 20x16”would be better, then cut out a newspaper to that size and tape it to your wall. Is it better? Probably. Is it still too small? Go larger! Try 30x20”. Getting there. Don’t be afraid – go larger yet! Try 30x40”.

You don’t want your wall art to feel crowded so if your wall is 60” wide, then a 40x30” will probably fit the space nicely. Conversely, if your wall is 96” long, you don’t want a wall art piece to get lost, which is what will happen with a 20x16” print.

To show what I mean, I created this graphic below. Most couches are about 70” long. You can see how a 10x8” photo barely gets noticed in this space. Sure the 20x16” is better, but it would still be “floating” on the wall above the couch. The 30x20” is better yet, but doesn’t the 40x30” really catch your eye?

Still not sure what size to go with? I can help! I will create a mockup using the image you’d like to use for your wall art, including the framing option of your choice so you can see how it would look in your home. We’ll discuss this during your “meet and greet” and I’ll take pictures of your home for this purpose. Want to see how two sizes will look on your wall? No problem! Mockups are great so you can make the choice of the size that’s right for you without any regrets.
